Timber Evaluation

Evaluating standing timber to determine the maximum price that should be paid and where a particular timber supply fits into the overall supply picture is a very difficult task.  HALCO’s TimberEvaluation™ system has been developed to address this issue.

The TimberEvaluation™ system combines HALCO’s WOODSIM™ (bucking simulation), SAWSIM® (sawing/peeling simulation) and WOODMAN™ (linear programming optimization) to model your process from standing tree to finished products, ready for market.

The primary inputs to TimberEvaluation™ are:

  • Cruise, LiDAR or harvester head data
  • Woods and mill bucking practices
  • Processing facility operating parameters

Sawmill

Veneer mill / Plywood plant

  • Lumber/veneer/plywood and byproduct market information

From these inputs, TimberEvaluation™ produces reports that summarize the following both overall and qualified by any field or combination of fields available in the underlying cruise data (e.g. source, stratum etc.).

  • Financial results
  • Timber/log supply usage
  • Key operating metrics of the processing facility
  • Volume and value of finished products produced and sold

Since the processing facility will normally be run on a mix of timber supplies that have been acquired over a period of time, policy runs may be made first, to determine the optimum operating policies to be used when the timber is processed, and where the bottlenecks in the processing are expected to occur for a given mix of timber supplies.
